The liturgical seasons of Advent and Christmas contain some of the finest music of Western Christianity. Three Masses are celebrated, each one marking the progression of light, through sunrise, to the brilliance of full daylight.
Advent is a time of preparation, in the first place for the coming of Christ at Christmas, but also for his Second Coming on the Last Day, to judge the living and the dead. Both ideas are present here ranging from a simple unpretentious hymn composed in the 9th century to the well known Advent prose Rorate Caeli Desuper, a comparatively late chant.
