From a background of Salvation Army
bands, Philip Smith remains an avid brass band enthusiast (having appeared as
Bandmaster with the Göteborg and Black Dyke Mills Bands among others),
while making many solo appearances with major orchestras. Formerly with the
Chicago Orchestra, he became Principal Trumpet of the New York Philharmonic
in 1988.
